Matt Caldie's blue-collar background gives him unique insight into the challenges facing the residents of Monroe County.
Matt grew up in nearby Bartholomew County, before coming to Bloomington to attend Indiana University in 2006. He graduated with an interdepartmental degree in philosophy and political science and knew immediately that Bloomington was the place that he wanted to call home.
However, job opportunities were scarce, wages were inadequate, and the cost of living was a constant challenge. Matt spent the decade after graduating from Indiana University working physically demanding jobs, including warehouse, factory, production, and facilities work. During this time, Matt moved nearly every year, always living with one to four roommates in order to save up the money to put down roots in Monroe County.
Now Matt lives with his wife Abby on Bloomington’s south side. He currently works as the Library Financial and Administrative Coordinator at Indiana University's Law Library. Matt is Vice Chair of the Bloomington Environmental Commission, serving in his fourth consecutive term. In his free time, Matt is active in the Bloomington ultimate frisbee community, including serving as an assistant coach for the IU women’s team.
